Chess Club
70 years
Running for over
We have been around for over 70 years, for most of this as the “Chess Section” of the Rolls-Royce Employee Recreational Society
Now known as Derby Leisure and Events
History and Key Facts
There is an internal club competition which runs during the season (September to May).
We have an active Junior section that meets separately before each club night.
Rolls-Royce enters five four player teams in the Derbyshire League competition, each playing about twelve matches in the season.
Rolls-Royce enters five teams in the Derbyshire Cup and Plate competition.
As well as the above organised chess there is lots of casual and non-competition chess, and over the board informal instruction for novices.
Informal quickplay competitions happen every week throughout the year, though in the season there may be exceptions. There are also occasional training evenings.
Near Christmas we have a "mince pies and mulled wine" social quickplay competition.
There are various multi club events during the year, held at the club.
The Club is affiliated to the English Chess Federation and all competitive matches are submitted to the ECF database so ECF registered members earn a rating.
The Club hosts big events for all clubs in the Derbyshire Chess Association a few times a year.
The Club meets on Thursdays throughout the year at 7.15 pm (6:00 pm for Juniors) in the Table Tennis Hut on the Derby Leisure and Events.
Full membership of the Club is £50 per annum. Visitors are welcome to come on a £1 per visit basis, which may be appropriate if you are deciding whether to join or if just want to play informal chess occasionally.
